First Foot Through The Door

My first job experience

Starting my first office based job at Property Webmasters has been a big change for me. Before this I had never worked in an office, I didn’t know what to expect. I thought that it might have been overwhelming but so far it has been a good experience. I have already learnt loads, met new people and picked up skills that I didn’t have before.

This blog is basically a rundown of what I have been doing since I started, what I have learnt and what it’s like having an office role job.

Getting used to the office

Walking into the office on my first day was intimidating: loads of people, desks, computers, phones ringing. A lot to take in but then I realised that everyone was actually really welcoming and helpful and that made it easier to settle in. I got seated on the sales team desk with Jim and Ants, who are now like my work Dads, they helped me log in and get a feel for everything used in the office.

One of the biggest differences compared to anything I have done before is always being around a team. If I ever get stuck there is always someone to ask, guide me through tasks. It’s definitely shown me that teamwork is important in the workplace and how it’s not embarrassing to ask for help. I have also discovered how much you learn from just being in an office, listening in on conversations or sitting in on meetings.

New skills i have developed

It might seem like a small thing but one of the most important skills I have developed here that is transferable to everything in life, is answering the phone professionally. At first it was awful not knowing what someone could ask you or who is on the other end of the phone. I was nervous. But over time I gained confidence and I learnt how to manage calls in a professional way whether it’s taking them, transferring or handling simple questions myself. This experience has definitely improved my communication skills.

I have also had the chance to shadow meetings with clients and the team. This has been really useful because it gives you an insight into how projects run and how the team communicates with the clients. It’s interesting to see how problems are solved and how strategies are planned out. Listening has taught me a lot about how the industry works and what each platform contributes too.

Platforms that I have conquered

One of the first platforms I started using here was Hubspot. In the beginning it looked complicated, busy, with so many buttons, dashboards and features that I just didn’t understand but now I have learned how businesses use Hubspot, to manage contracts, track leads and run campaigns all in one place. I find it cool. It was something I had never heard of before now i know it has something that helps companies grow and stay organised

Another big thing I have worked on is Google Ads. I had heard of this one before but didn’t have any understanding at all on how it worked. Now I have had the chance to see how ads are set up, how targeting works and how important keywords are. It’s been eye opening. So much strategy goes into creating successful campaigns. I have also learnt that running ads isn’t just about setting them up and leaving them, it’s about checking results and finding ways to improve them, small changes can make a big difference in performance.  I’ve even had the chance to make adjustments myself, which has given me a real confidence boost. Knowing that I can now navigate one of the world’s biggest advertising platforms feels good.

Probably the thing I’m most proud of so far is creating a website. I have never done anything like that before so it was very exciting but also daunting. Learning about CMS platforms, layouts, user experience and content management was very interesting and it intrigued me. It gave me a sense of achievement, seeing it coming together from start to finish. I made a live website that users can interact with. Very cool. As much as it amused me it demonstrated to me the creativity and technical skill that goes into Property Webmasters projects, and it’s something I’d love to continue developing.

Design has always been an interest of mine. I love social media and posting things but I had never used Canva before professionally. Here I had the opportunity to use it: to create marketing assets, graphics and content for campaigns. What I have discovered is that Canva is not just about making things pretty, it’s about creating visuals that align with brand identity, communicate messages clearly, and catch attention quickly. Whether it’s social media posts, blog headers, or internal resources, design plays a key role in marketing, and Canva has been a good tool to learn. I liked this one.

Blog Writing

Writing has never been something that’s come naturally to me, so when I was first asked to create a blog, I wasn’t sure where to start. At the beginning, I struggled with finding the right words, making the blog flow, and making sure it was written in the right style. It’s a lot harder than it looks when you’re trying to balance being professional, informative, and interesting all at the same time. But over time, and with a bit of help from the team, I’ve started to get the hang of it. I’ve learnt how to plan blogs better, how to use SEO to structure content, and how to make writing feel less scary. I still wouldn’t say it’s my strongest skill, but I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. It’s definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I know the only way I’ll get better is by keeping at it. Blog writing has shown me the importance of tone of voice and consistency. Every post is a chance to add value to the reader while also reflecting the brand’s personality. Writing for a business has been different from personal writing.

Looking back

When I look back on everything I’ve done so far, I realise how much I’ve learnt in such a short space of time. From using platforms like HubSpot and Google Ads, to building a website, writing blogs, and even just answering the phone, it’s all been a huge learning curve. I know I’ve still got loads more to learn, but this first step into office life at Property Webmasters has given me a solid foundation to build on. I’m excited to keep improving my skills and seeing where it takes me. Having the team around me supporting me (also having a laugh) has made a massive difference to my development. It’s shown me that work isn’t just about the tasks you do but also about the people you spend your days with. I’ve ended up with a second home who look out for me. They’re always checking in, giving advice, and helping me figure things out when I’m stuck.
